A Spectral Class “Oh” Star

Out having a drink with an acquaintance this evening. A muscular guy strolls into the bar wearing a tank top: his arms covered with tattoos. One of the acquaintances of my acquaintace offers, “See that guy? He’s a porn star.” Wel gol-ly. Is all it takes to be a “star” in the gay community? Schuck your clothes for $$$ and play hide-the-heat-seeking missile on camera?

If so, fame ain’t what it used to be.

Well, yeah. But not just in the gay community, but porn in general.

Quoting the Wikipedia article “Pornographic actor”

Most male performers in straight porn are paid less than their female costars. Ron Jeremy has commented on the pay scale of women and men of the sex film industry: “The average guy gets $300 to $400 a scene, or $100 to $200 if he’s new. A woman makes $100,000 to $250,000 at the end of the year.[13] “Girls can easily make 100K-250K per year, plus stuff on the side like strip shows and appearances. The average guy makes $40,000 a year.”

So, you figure the “average” guy has to shoot at least one scene every three days to make a decent living doing just that.

If it is true that the term “star” is used for anyone performer in that business, regardless of how unknown they might be, then “star” as a term means “anyone doing anything on camera”……Ooh, I do not want to take that any farther!

Actually, in acting and related areas, “starring” means to have a featured part in the production. (dictionary.com supports this definition) Therefore, anyone who isn’t an extra and doesn’t only have a ‘bit’ part could be said to have “starred” in the film/play/whatever. This would be why the bukakke film “Load Warriors” only credits the women on screen.

When “everybody” knows who you are is when you become known as a “super star”.
